Rain, rain go away…

The final touches were being added to the renovation this week; slowed down only by the seemingly incessant rain we experienced over the past seven days.

The exterior paintwork is almost finished, hopefully the rain will hold off this week and allow the job to be completed.

The plumber should have been back to run the last of the pipework and finish off the installation of internal plumbing. Unfortunately we have had day after day of rain up here in Brisbane, sometimes heavy, sometimes just a light misting rain, but enough to keep the ground wet. Although the land drains well there has been so much rain the ground became sodden; so much so that the painter’s ladders were sinking into the mud. Hopefully the rain will start to ease off and the plumbers will be able to complete their work early next week.

The builders were back to lay down some Masonite underlay over the old uneven floor boards upstairs ready for the vinyl to be laid next Wednesday. They also fitted the door handles and cut down some of the old lattice work which was then refitted to the upper rear deck. This has afforded a bit more privacy to the back deck and made it seem more like an outside living room.

The electrician returned and completed the fit off of all lights and fans, we now have power and light back in the house.

The painter kept plugging away and, as can be seen on the photo, has almost completed the exterior of the house. It is so nice to see the old colour disappear and be replaced by the fresh new paintwork. To break things up, it must get rather tedious at times prepping and painting such a large expanse of wall, the painter has been touching up other areas, working on doors and balustrading as well. Hopefully he has also been applying the insect repellant well, the mosquitos have been hanging around in plague proportions.

With the carpet being installed we are starting to really feel like the end of the renovation is in sight.

With the carpet being installed we are starting to really feel like the end of the renovation is in sight.

On Thursday the carpet layer arrived to install new carpet in the three upstairs bedrooms. We went for a cheaper, hardwearing carpet as the home will eventually become a rental property. With this end in mind we also chose a mid – brown colour; we’ve found if you go for a dark carpet it shows the dirt as much as a very light coloured colour would. The carpet has a strong linear pattern to it and we have had it run across the room, creating the illusion of a wider, larger space, I’m not confident this illusion will remain in place once the girls add their bits and pieces back into the rooms though.

So all being well we should be nearly ready to move back late next week.

Rats, I can hear it raining again. Oh well at least the frogs are happy!

You are getting all of our rain!!! We’ve been in moderate drought for the last several years but it is now becoming severe. March and April are typically the months in which we get the highest rainfall but we got less than ½” for the whole month of March. So things are looking pretty dismal here. I only wish we could take some of your rain and it would be a win-win for both of us by the sounds of things.

I’d be in that Hez, it would be nice to have a climate where there was a balance of rainfall and sunshine and not have to worry about floods or droughts. It must be a worry with having the animals to feed, particularly coming into summer.
